Continuity

Continuity is a work paying tribute to the cycle of family life. I'm interested in works capturing the passage of time, ageing and the female role within families. Women in families have historically held nurturing roles and have been the vessels for carrying forward the traditions, values and continuity of connection over the generations. The work echoes a vessel shape, and also a ring shape as the three generations of women in our family have chosen to marry their life partners.
Hands are an expressive and important part of the human body, which is why I chose them to represent the three women in the work. Techniques of repetition, overlay and stencilling have all contributed to this large-scale work composed of one hundred and seventy hands symbolising combined ages – twenty-eight from my daughter, sixty of mine and eighty-two of my mother's. Use of shades of ink - sepia, burnt sienna and a combination of these two applied with different types of brushes created the individual differences for each set of hands.
Mehwish Iqbal’s regular thematic use of women’s strength; together with her large scale stencil work Grey Wall, 2020, were key influences in my creative process.
