Boxed In 2021
2021, balsa wood, acrylic paint
25cm W x 35cm D x 60cm H

Our lives were dominated by boxes during Covid – focussed on screens in rooms within homes.  Pent up human energy restricted within these boxes, and often resulting in damaged mental health.

Boxed In 2021 was a response to the scenario faced by many Australians.  Through the intersecting planes creating a strong angular line composition, the use of negative space as an emphasis, and occasional stark colour contrast panels, I have tried to capture the essence of pent-up energy looking for release through the dominant diagonal direction, all delicately balanced on two intersecting planes.

The soft tone and texture of the balsa contrasts with the matte finish of the acrylic paint, creating a dramatic mood in the work.  The scattered colour panels together with the diagonal line rhythm are designed to keep the viewer engaged and curious – wanting to see the work from all angles.

As the work has a focus on domestic lives, it is sized to allow for location in a domestic setting.
